The Arthur River is a long and fast flowing river that can rise significantly during floods. Flooding can impact low lying agricultural land and roads. Sections of the Murchison and Ridgley Highways, and many other important roads can be cut in several places. Smaller waterways that join the Arthur River can also flood if there is heavy local rain. Flash flooding means there can be little specific warnings beyond forecasts for heavy rain or severe weather.

Even if your home is not inundated, you should be prepared for isolation plus potential power and telecommunications outages.

Travel in the area is likely to be difficult or impossible until roads are clear.  If you are safe at home or elsewhere, it is usually best you stay where you are until the flooding subsides, unless there is an emergency. If you need to evacuate, you should leave early, before flood waters rise.

The Arthur River has a long history of flooding, with significant flood events in 1888, 1923, 2007, 2016 and 2022. For example, in 2016:

  • over 300 cattle were lost and,
  • There was considerable debris build up against the Arthur River bridge.

Flood water and debris have previously damaged bridges in the area.

Floods like the one shown in the map, or worse, will occur again. No two floods are the same.

Whenever rain that may lead to flooding is expected, the Bureau will issue a Flood Watch – a “heads up” early advice of forecast weather that may lead to flooding.

There are no formal warning levels for other waterways in the area.

降水观测 at Luncheon Hill and Waratah can indicate possible flood risks. Rainfall of between 50-75mm in 24 hours can start to impact the area. Given lack of warning infrastructure in the area, it is best to act on the predictive BoM warnings rather than wait for any flood alerts during rainfall.

这 N.W. Tasmania (West Takone) Radar is useful to be aware in real-time where heavy rainfall is falling.  Radar Rainfall estimates can also fill in gaps in areas where there are no rainfall stations.

While no two floods are the same, the following describes what you can expect at different flood levels around the area. Even if your property is not flooded, you need to think about access. Different levels of rainfall can cause flooding depending on its intensity, duration and how wet the ground is beforehand and where the rain falls.

There are no formal flood levels in the Arthur River catchment area. However, the impacts shown in these maps have at least a 5% chance of occurring in any year.

There are often sharp rises in the Arthur River catchment that can cause minor flooding in low lying paddocks, orchards and other farmland.  Stock should be moved for their safety.  There may also be flooding across some minor roads and parkland areas.

There is more extensive flooding of agricultural land, and some buildings may be impacted to above floor height. Some properties may be isolated as roads become flooded.

There is at least a 2% chance each year of major flooding along smaller waterways and the Arthur River. Major flooding could flood homes and businesses in parts of

  • Arthur River
  • Waratah, and
  • Roger River.

When the Hellyer River – Guildford Junction gauge shows levels of 1.9m or higher, it suggests there could be significant flooding downstream.

Flood and tidal water may affect businesses near the river in Arthur River. Other properties prone to flooding include:

  • around Jaegers Road in Arthur River, and
  • Magnet Court in Waratah.

Residents and tourists might be cut off for some time if roads in the Arthur River catchment area become flooded.

5. Keep up to date
