Riverine flooding information for the Liffey River

The Liffey River can flood Bracknell and surrounds. The map shows the expected Moderate and Major Flood levels in around the Bracknell and Liffey areas. You are likely to experience a major flood in your lifetime.

In a major flooding event, roads in and around Bracknell and Liffey are likely to be cut and some areas inundated. If you need to evacuate, you should leave early, before flood waters rise. Listen to ABC local radio for warnings and advice.

In such flooding events, the upper Liffey River area may be isolated due to flooding around Bracknell Road and Liffey Road. Access and egress to the east of Bracknell may be closed on Bracknell Lane. Flooding, landslips or fallen trees may also cut minor roads. It is dangerous to drive through flooded roads, particularly in isolated areas.

Even if your home is not inundated, you may be isolated for several days before flood waters recede. You should have supplies for up to three days and be prepared for power and telecommunications outages. Note if you are isolated, you may not be able to access medical or other help if needed.

Example past flooding events around Bracknell and upper Liffey River include:

• 2016 there was a moderate flooding event in January and a major flood event in June, which caused extensive infrastructure damage across northern and northeast Tasmania.
• October 2022 there was significant major flooding of the Liffey River catchment, with extensive damage to road and bridge infrastructure in the upper Liffey area. There were several assisted rescues in the upper Liffey River region.

Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) Forecasts, Warnings, and Observations

BoM issues a Flood Watch when predicted weather might cause floods in one or two days. A Flood Watch may

• be for a specific area such as Deloraine, or Meander River catchment, or
• be generalised such as for Great Western Tiers, Central Plateau or Central North forecast district.

BoM issues a Severe Weather Warning for very heavy rain that may lead to flash floodingwhenever thisweather is occurring or is expected in an area. The amount of time between the warning andthe arrival of the heavy rain can vary from an hour to 24 hours or sometimes more.

BoM does not issue Flood Warnings with specific flood heightsfor the Liffey River. There are some gauging sites on the river: Liffey River above West Channel (downstream of Bracknell) and Liffey River at Carrick. Both sites do not have Minor, Moderate and Major flood levels defined.

No two floods are the same. Floods like the one shown in the map or worse will occur again.

If you live in a low-lying area you may be at risk of flooding. Even if your home is safe, you may need to detour around flooded areas. Never drive through or enter flood waters.

Knowing what to do can save your life and help protect your property. Preparing a Home Emergency Plan is one of the best ways to prepare.

Flood levels at Bracknell and upper Liffey River

While no two floods are the same, the following table shows what you can expect at different flood levels around Meander. Even if your property is not flooded, you need to think about access routes.

• Largely contained to the river channel with some minor breakouts into adjacent paddocks.
• Livestock and agricultural equipment should be moved from next to the river channel.
• There are no buildings at risk of inundation.
• No properties are isolated
• There are no roads inundated.

• Water spills over riverbanks and covers larger areas of land
• Some homes in the upper Liffey River area are within modelled inundation areas.
• Above floor flooding is unlikely
• Livestock and agricultural equipment should be moved from low lying land.
• Above floor flooding is unlikely for homes that may be just within inundation areas in the upper Liffey catchment.
• Some homes can become isolated in the upper Liffey River area.
• Flooding may close roads such as:
  • Pitts Lane
  • Liffey Road
  • Myrtle Creek Road

대규모 홍수

• Widespread flooding into the floodplains, may impact homes and buildings with above floor flooding.
• Livestock and agricultural equipment should be moved to the highest areas available.
• Above floor flooding is likely for some homes in the upper Liffey River area.
• The upper Liffey River area becomes isolated from the Bracknell Road river crossing.
• Access and egress from the eastern side of Bracknell is likely inundated at Bracknell Lane.
• Closed roads:
  • Bracknell Lane
  • Bracknell Road
• Roads may be flooded locally at culverts may become blocked, or the capacity exceeded.

3. Reduce your risk from flooding where you can

Avoid travelling during storms and after storms
