It’s important to prepare your home or business to keep people and property safe. By preparing for emergencies, you can reduce the impacts and recover better.
What to do:
- Have an emergency plan.
- Have a discussion with your family, friends and neighbours about what you will do if there is a storm.
- Know where you will go, how you will get there, what evacuation routes you can use, what you will do with your animals, and how you will manage any health needs.
- Maintain your yard and outdoor areas by clearing leaves and branches.
- Regularly clean your gutters, downpipes and drains to prevent them from blocking and causing damage to your house
- Trim trees and branches to prevent them falling in a storm
- Check your roof regularly for damage to tiles and roofing materials
- Check that your windows and doors seal properly and get any previously broken windows repaired.
- Put together an emergency kit with essentials (water, food, torch, batteries, phone chargers, medicines, important documents & pet supplies).
