Tasmanians are urged to prepare for widespread rainfall and flooding, forecast from tomorrow evening until Friday morning.

“Advice received from the Bureau of Meteorology today forecasts that heavy and consistent rain is likely from tomorrow evening, across Thursday, clearing Friday morning,” said Tasmania SES Acting Director, Leon Smith.

“The forecast is for steady and significant rain state-wide, and specifically intense rainfall in the north and north-west.”

Widespread minor to moderate flooding is likely from Thursday. Major flooding is possible at some locations. Localised flooding is possible in small creeks and low lying areas in locations that receive heavy rainfall.

“People are encouraged to be aware of the forecast and prepare their property before the rain arrives – this means knowing your flood risk and understanding whether your property is prone to flooding.

People should review their household emergency kit and flood emergency plan, including evacuation triggers now. Livestock and animals should be moved to higher ground, out of flood prone areas.

“With the ground being saturated in many areas of Tasmania, rivers will rise quickly over coming days,” said Mr Smith.

SES advises people to do the following:

  • Check bom.gov.au for the latest weather forecast and warnings.
  • Check TasALERT.com for current SES flood warnings.
  • Check that family and neighbours, especially those who are vulnerable, are aware and have a plan in place.
  • Be prepared for flash-flooding.
  • Clear drains and gutters of debris so they flow freely.
  • Have a plan for managing pets and livestock.
  • Be prepared for power outages.

In the event of heavy rainfall and flooding:

  • Consider minimising unnecessary travel during this rain event
  • Supervise children closely.
  • Manage pets and livestock.
  • Never enter or drive through floodwaters, and when driving look out for debris on roads including fallen trees and power lines.
  • Report power outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
  • Listen to the ABC radio
  • Call SES on 132 500 for flood and storm-related emergency assistance.
  • Dial Triple Zero (000) in a life-threatening emergency.
