The Tasmanian community is again being advised to prepare for rain over the weekend and into early next week.

Tasmania SES Acting Director, Leon Smith said advice from the Bureau of Meteorology is to expect moderate rainfall in the northwest and northeast overnight, particularly in elevated areas.

“More significant falls are possible in the Western Tiers and surrounding areas,” he said.

“Afternoon thunderstorms are also possible in the southwest today and again tomorrow in the north and northeast, which could lead to isolated heavy rainfall.

“A Flood Watch is current for riverine flooding in several catchments in the northwest, north and northeast, as well as the Derwent River (including River Ouse and Jordan River) and the Coal River.

“Sea fog may also be present in areas state-wide.

“The low-pressure system causing this weather is continuing to develop into next week, and at this stage we expect Monday and Tuesday to be the wettest days.

“We’re urging members of the community to stay up-to-date at TasALERT.com and prepare their properties accordingly.

“With heavy rain, this means knowing your flood risk and understanding whether your street and home are prone to flooding.

“As always, SES crews are ready to assist if needed.”

“Anyone in an area affected by rains is encouraged to be vigilant, never enter or drive through floodwaters, and when driving look out for debris on roads including fallen trees and power lines.”
