These are designed to lower the flood risk in parts of Latrobe. Areas inside the levee mitigated areas are expected to flood less often or not as deeply as before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, levees are not guaranteed to stop all flooding. SES recommends people evacuate levee protected areas in major flood events. Major flooding could see the levee overtop or fail. Major flooding has a 2% chance (2% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) of occurring in any year. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your property is outside the levee mitigated area, your flood risk has not changed. There is also some uncertainty about how the new infrastructure might affect flooding in other areas nearby. The maps show areas that are likely to be inundated and isolated in a flood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a major flood, roads in and around Latrobe will be cut before some areas are flooded. If you need to evacuate, you should leave early, before flood waters rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.TasALERT.com\">www.TasALERT.com<\/a> or listen to ABC local radio for warnings and advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flood waters may isolate your home for several days. Even if your home is not flooded, you may not be able to access help if needed. You should have supplies for at least three days and prepare for power and telecommunications outages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u60a8\u6709\u6d2a\u6c34\u98ce\u9669\u5417\uff1f<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Past major flooding events around Latrobe since the construction of hydro-electric dams upstream include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>August 1970 \u2013 This major flood was one of the largest recorded floods of the Mersey River and caused extensive inundation and damage to local businesses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>March 1977 \u2013 This flood caused 14 homes to be inundated.&nbsp; Flooding was primarily due to flows in Kings Creek, not the Mersey River, so it occurred with much less warning than usual.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>June 2016 \u2013 Highest recorded flood at Latrobe.&nbsp; 121 properties were flooded, and there was significant damage to public infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>October 2022 \u2013 This flood was similar in scale to the one in 1970, however people were better prepared.&nbsp; Despite widespread inundation, losses were minimised.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the dams, there were flooding events in 1884, 1893, 1894, 1923, 1929, 1944 and 1952.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"859\" height=\"606\" src=\"https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Latrobe-1PC-levee-mitigated-area-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"Latrobe levee protected area flood map 1% AEP\" class=\"wp-image-10748\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Latrobe-1PC-levee-mitigated-area-rotated.jpg 859w, https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Latrobe-1PC-levee-mitigated-area-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Latrobe-1PC-levee-mitigated-area-768x542.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 859px) 100vw, 859px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flood levels at Latrobe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While no two flood events are the same, the following table shows what you can expect for different flood levels around Latrobe. Even if your property is not flooded, you should think about access routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minor flood<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rainfall likely to trigger this kind of flooding: 55-110mm\/24hrs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>River levels: 3.1m to 3.5m @ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/fwo\/IDT60250\/IDT60250.091279.plt.shtml\">Mersey Rv at Latrobe Bridge<\/a> river gauge<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likelihood off occurring in a year (AEP): 50% chance of occurring<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likely flood impacts: Flood water may cover low-lying areas. Farmland surrounding Latrobe is likely to be affected. Farm equipment and livestock in low-lying areas should be moved to higher ground. People living in very low-lying areas in and around Latrobe should be alert and stay informed in case conditions worsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u4e2d\u5ea6\u6d2a\u6c34<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rainfall likely to trigger this kind of flooding: 85-150mm\/24hrs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>River levels: 3.6m to 3.9m @ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/fwo\/IDT60250\/IDT60250.091279.plt.shtml\">Mersey Rv at Latrobe Bridge<\/a> river gauge<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likelihood off occurring in a year (AEP): 10-20% chance of occurring<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flood impacts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Flood water will cover larger areas of land and enter some homes and other buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Railton Road, Mersey Main Road, Coal Hill Road &amp; Bells Parade may be flooded<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a high moderate flood water may enter houses &amp; businesses in the low-lying areas of the town around:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mersey Main Road<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>River Road\/Twiss Street<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shale Road<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tarleton Road and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mersey Main Road<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u7279\u5927\u6d2a\u707e<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rainfall likely to trigger this kind of flooding: <a href=\"Rainfall: 120-190mm\/24hrs\">85-150mm\/24hrs<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>River levels: 4.0m+ @ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/fwo\/IDT60250\/IDT60250.091279.plt.shtml\">Mersey Rv at Latrobe Bridge<\/a> river gauge<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likelihood off occurring in a year (AEP): 2% chance of occurring<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flood impacts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Widespread flooding may cause significant flooding of homes, businesses and other buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mersey River may flood large parts of the town west of the supermarket\/Kings Park will likely be inundated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flooding from Kings Creek, will likely affected houses in the surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many properties will flood including residences &amp; businesses in::<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gilbert Street<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Victor Street<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urquhart Lane<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Twiss Lane<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Twiss Street<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Madeline Street<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Last Street West<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Railton Road<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shale Road<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mersey Main Road<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kobie Lane<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Properties in Coal Hill Road, Ballahoo Road, Old Deloraine Road and Devil Road may be isolated for days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"880\" height=\"623\" src=\"https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Latrobe-1PC-Overland-and-Riverine-flood-depth-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"Latrobe 1% AEP mapped Overland flow and Riverine flood depth\" class=\"wp-image-10749\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Latrobe-1PC-Overland-and-Riverine-flood-depth-rotated.jpg 880w, https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Latrobe-1PC-Overland-and-Riverine-flood-depth-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Latrobe-1PC-Overland-and-Riverine-flood-depth-768x544.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u6211\u5e94\u8be5\u600e\u4e48\u505a\uff1f<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check the map to see whether your home or business is at risk of being flooded. If it is, you should have a plan for leaving during a flood event.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check if you can safely get to or from your home, work, or school during a flood. If you need to leave during a flood, make sure your route is safe or leave early before floodwaters rise. If you need to evacuate during a flood, make sure your route safe and think about:<ul><li>where you would go<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>how you could get there<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>what you need to take.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare your home or business to minimise possible flood damage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare a Home Emergency Plan. No two floods are the same.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you live in a low-lying area, your house may flood. Even if your home is safe, you may need to detour around flooded areas or your road access may be cut. Never drive into or enter flood waters. Roads and bridges may be washed out or unsafe.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u4e86\u89e3\u8be5\u600e\u4e48\u505a\u53ef\u4ee5\u62ef\u6551\u4f60\u7684\u751f\u547d\u5e76\u5e2e\u52a9\u4fdd\u62a4\u4f60\u7684\u8d22\u4ea7\u3002\u5236\u5b9a\u5bb6\u5ead\u5e94\u6025\u8ba1\u5212\u662f\u51c6\u5907\u5de5\u4f5c\u7684\u6700\u4f73\u65b9\u6cd5\u4e4b\u4e00\u3002\u51b3\u5b9a\u5929\u6c14\u548c\u964d\u96e8\u89e6\u53d1\u6761\u4ef6\uff0c\u4ee5\u4fbf\u77e5\u9053\u4f55\u65f6\u91c7\u53d6\u884c\u52a8\u3002.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u6fb3\u5927\u5229\u4e9a\u6c14\u8c61\u5c40\u5929\u6c14\u9884\u62a5\u3001\u8b66\u544a\u548c\u89c2\u6d4b<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bureau of Meteorology (the Bureau) issues a Flood Watch when predicted weather might cause floods in one or two days. A Flood Watch may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be for a specific area such as Latrobe, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be generalised such as for north-west river basins<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Bureau issues Minor, Moderate and Major flood warnings specifically for the Mersey River,<\/strong> including predicted flood height. The time between the warning and flooding occurring can vary from a few hours to one or two days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rainfall Monitoring and Observations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>River levels and rainfall in the Mersey River catchment (including the Fisher River and Arm River) can be monitored on the Bureau of Meteorology website.&nbsp; Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/tas\/flood\/northwestern.shtml\">www.bom.gov.au\/tas\/flood\/northwestern.shtml<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The N.W. Tasmania (West Takone) Radar is useful to be aware of where heavy rainfall is falling.&nbsp; Radar Rainfall estimates can fill in gaps in areas where there are no rainfall stations. Go to: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/products\/IDR523.loop.shtml\">www.bom.gov.au\/products\/IDR523.loop.shtml<\/a> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2
