The maps show where a flood is likely to reach. The darker blue areas are the most likely to flood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the timing of the flood peak and tides, levels can vary somewhat from those shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a major flood, roads in and around West Ulverstone will be cut before some areas are flooded. If you need to evacuate, you should leave early, before flood waters rise. Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/alert.tas.gov.au\/\">TasALERT<\/a>&nbsp;or listen to ABC local radio for warnings and advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flood waters may isolate your home for several days. Even if your home is not flooded, you may not be able to access help if needed. You should have supplies for at least three days and prepare for power and telecommunications outages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are you at risk of flood?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Past recent flooding events around West Ulverstone include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>June 2016 \u2013 Some businesses were flooded upstream and there was significant damage to public infrastructure including roads and bridges. In West Ulverstone there was significant inundation of Lobster Creek Road, Allison Bridge and car parking areas near the Ulverstone Sport &amp; Leisure Centre. See <a href=\"https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Get-Ready-Emergency_Digital_7-Oct-2024-ART.pdf\">Get Ready for Emergencies<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 A guide for individuals and households to prepare for emergencies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are a primary producer, the <a href=\"https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Primary-producer-flood-readiness-kit.pdf\">Farm Flood Readiness Kit<\/a> provides advice on preparing for a flood to help protect your business and stock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you will be isolated you may need to evacuate early.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess your home or business and prepare it to minimise possible flood damage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are camping in a flood prone area, make sure you stay informed and move to higher ground early if a flood is likely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Floods like the one shown in the map or worse will occur again. No two floods are the same.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you live in a low-lying area, your house may flood. Even if your home is safe, you may need to detour around flooded areas or your road access may be cut. Never drive into or enter flood waters. Roads and bridges may be washed out or unsafe.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Knowing what to do can save your life and help protect your property. Having a Home Emergency Plan is one of the best ways to prepare. A Flood Watch may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be for a specific area such as North West Coast forecast district, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be generalised such as for north-west river basins<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bureau issues Severe Weather Warning for Heavy rain with the potential to cause flash flooding when forecast or observed weather may cause flash flooding. A Severe Weather Warning may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be for a specific area such as Ulverstone and surrounds; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be &nbsp;generalized, &nbsp;such as North West Coast between Burnie and Port Sorell and north of a line from Ridgley to Elizabeth Town.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Bureau of Meteorology does not provide a specific flood warning for the Leven River.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rainfall Monitoring and Observations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst the Leven River catchment has no sub-daily Bureau of Meteorology rainfall stations, rainfall in surrounding areas can provide a good idea of what rain is falling in the upper catchment of the Leven River.&nbsp; Rainfall at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydro.com.au\/water\/rainfall\/GetRainfallDataFile?filename=Web_Rain_FORTH.pdf\">Lake Gardiner<\/a> dan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydro.com.au\/water\/rainfall\/GetRainfallDataFile?filename=Web_Rain_NORTHWEST.pdf\">Waratah<\/a> can be monitored on the Hydro Tasmania website. Rainfall at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/products\/IDT60801\/IDT60801.94955.shtml\">Sheffield<\/a> can be monitored on the Bureau website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The N.W. Tasmania (West Takone) Radar is useful to be aware of where heavy rainfall is falling.&nbsp; Radar Rainfall estimates can fill in gaps in areas where there are no rainfall stations. Go to: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/products\/IDR523.loop.shtml\">http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/products\/IDR523.loop.shtml<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SES will issue flood warnings on <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alert.tas.gov.au\/?list=warnings\"><strong>tasalert.com<\/strong><\/a><strong> based on forecasts from the Bureau in line with the Australian Warning System.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6832\" style=\"width: 60px;\" src=\"https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Flood-yellow.png\" alt=\"\"><\/td><td>&nbsp;<strong>Advice (Yellow):<\/strong> an incident has started. There is no immediate danger. Stay up to date in case the situation changes.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6837\" style=\"width: 60px;\" src=\"https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Flood-orange.png\" alt=\"\"><\/td><td><strong>Watch and Act (Orange):<\/strong> There is a heightened level of threat. Conditions are changing and you need to start taking action now to protect you and your family<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6834\" style=\"width: 60px;\" src=\"https:\/\/d2tv960yzi0spr.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Flood-red.png\" alt=\"\"><\/td><td><strong>Emergency Warning (Red):<\/strong> An Emergency Warning is the highest level of warning. You may be in danger and need to take action immediately. Know your risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Flooding often happens in Tasmania and can cause widespread and significant damage. In the past 200 years there have been 78 flood related deaths in Tasmania. This guide is to help you understand flood risk in your area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Prepare your household<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-normal-font-size\"><strong>Have an emergency plan that covers storms and floods<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thinking about what you would do in a storm or flood means you are more prepared and everyone is safer. Have an emergency plan that everyone in your household understands. Check that family and neighbours are safe and aware of what\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">During<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.  Keep up to date<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep aware of what is happening around you. Check forecasts, observations and warnings regularly.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alert.tas.gov.au\/\">TasALERT<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-01-26\/frequency-map-1\/10753108?nw=0\">your local ABC radio station<\/a> or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>yang <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/water\/floods\/floodWarningServices.shtml\">Bureau of Meteorology\u2019s<\/a> website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.  Act Safe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Supervise children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare for possible power, water or internet outages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check your emergency kit is ready to go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep clear of flooded areas such as drains. <strong>NEVER<\/strong>&nbsp;walk, play, ride or drive in floodwater. You can\u2019t always see what is under the water or how deep or fast-moving the water is. It is easy to be swept away and drown in as little as 20cm of fast-moving water. Flood water can be dangerous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-normal-font-size\">When your home may be flooded<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Put household items up high to minimise possible damage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn off the electricity and gas if it is safe to do so.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A great way to stop sewerage flowing back into your home is to place sandbags inside plastic bags and use them to block toilets and cover drains and sinks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave while you can get out safely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-normal-font-size\"><strong>If you need to evacuate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Follow the advice from SES \/ Tasmania Police. &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take your emergency kit.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to friends or family in a safer place or an evacuation centre.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let others know where you have gone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-normal-font-size\"><strong>Look after your animals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You are responsible for your animals in an emergency. If you have pets and other animals it will take you longer to evacuate in a flood or other emergency. Sightseers delay emergency services and cause accidents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch out for hazards such as\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>water over roads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>damaged powerlines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>landslides<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>damaged roads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>falling trees or roofing iron.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never drive through flood waters. Most deaths and rescues in floods are from people driving through flood waters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drive slowly and turn your headlights on roads not affected by flood waters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep listening for ABC Local Radio updates, road re-openings, community meetings, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you left your home, do not return home until SES or Tasmania Police tell you it is safe to do so.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of road hazards, such as mud or debris on the road, damaged roads\/bridges and crews working on clean-up and repairs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-normal-font-size\"><strong>If your home has been damaged<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stay at ground level while checking for damage.
