The Arthur River is a long and fast flowing river that can rise significantly during floods. Flooding can impact low lying agricultural land and roads. Sections of the Murchison and Ridgley Highways, and many other important roads can be cut in several places. Smaller waterways that join the Arthur River can also flood if there is heavy local rain. Flash flooding means there can be little specific warnings beyond forecasts for heavy rain or severe weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The maps in this guide show the level of flooding that has a 1% chance of happening any year. You are likely to experience flooding such as that shown in the maps in your lifetime. Tasmanians need to prepare for flood events that may not happen often as well as the minor flooding they may have experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if your home is not inundated, you should be prepared for isolation plus potential power and telecommunications outages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travel in the area is likely to be difficult or impossible until roads are clear.  If you are safe at home or elsewhere, it is usually best you stay where you are until the flooding subsides, unless there is an emergency. If you need to evacuate, you should leave early, before flood waters rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arthur River has a long history of flooding, with significant flood events in 1888, 1923, 2007, 2016 and 2022. For example, in 2016:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • over 300 cattle were lost and,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • There was considerable debris build up against the Arthur River bridge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Flood water and debris have previously damaged bridges in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
