Understand your risk and get ready<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

If there is a major flood in this area, the Emu River and Cooee Creek could flood houses, businesses and roads, including the Bass Highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • In Cooee, properties on the Bass Highway, Thirkell St and Turrung St are most at risk of flooding<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • In Burnie, the Emu River could flood Fern Glade Rd and the Bass Highway bridge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    If there is heavy local rain the creeks in this area can flood, impacting many parts of Burnie CBD and surrounding areas. This is known as flash flooding. Flash flooding means there can be little specific warning beyond forecasts for heavy rain or severe weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The creeks that could cause flooding to properties and roadways include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Messengers Creek, in East Cam<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Shorewell Creek in Parklands<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Whalebone Creek in Hillcrest and Burnie<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Romaine Creek in South Burnie.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Even if your home is not inundated, you should be prepared for isolation plus potential power and telecommunications outages. The Bass Highway may be cut at Cooee and South Burnie during a major flood event. This includes access to the region\u2019s main hospital from areas to the east. Travel in the area is likely to be difficult or impossible until roads are clear.  If you are safe at home or elsewhere, it is usually best you stay where you are until the flooding subsides, unless there is an emergency. If you need to evacuate, you should leave early, before flood waters rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Floods affected this area in 2016, 2011 and 2008. In 2011 Cooee Creek flooded many businesses and buildings in Cooee near Cambria Rd. In 2008 Romaine Creek flooded properties in South Burnie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
