Tasmanians now have easier access to important flood risk information, with the Tasmanian Strategic Flood Maps now available through the RiskReady website.
The maps represent an important step forward in helping communities better understand local flood risk and build resilience to future flood events.
A/Executive Director, Tasmania SES and Volunteers, Simon Pilkington said making flood information more accessible would support individuals, businesses, community organisations and local governments to make informed decisions about preparedness and risk mitigation.
“Understanding your local flood risk is one of the most effective ways to prepare for future emergencies,” he said.
“By making this information readily available through the RiskReady website, which forms part of the TasAlert app and website, we are empowering Tasmanians with the knowledge they need to better understand the hazards that may affect their homes, properties, businesses and communities.”
Through the RiskReady website, users can now view flood hazard information about properties across Tasmania, providing greater awareness of potential flood impacts in their local area and supporting planning for future events.
Significant work has been undertaken to ensure the information is presented in a format that is accessible, practical and user-friendly for the broader community.
“The addition of these maps to RiskReady means anyone with an interest in a property can better understand, prepare for and respond to the presence and risk of natural hazards,” Mr Pilkington said.
“Having this information available in one central location helps people make informed decisions and take practical steps to reduce their risk.”
The Tasmanian Strategic Flood Maps complement the SES Storm and Flood Ready Local Flood Guides already available through the Tasmania SES website giving users access to a broader range of flood risk information and preparedness resources.
Tasmanians are encouraged to explore the maps, learn about the risks in their area and take practical steps to protect themselves, their families and their properties.
By staying informed, planning ahead and understanding local hazards, communities across Tasmania can become safer, stronger and more resilient in the face of future emergencies.
