Severe Weather Warning & Flood Watch

The Bureau of Meteorology have issued a Severe Weather Warning for Heavy Rainfall and a Flood Watch.

  • Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Smithton, Sheffield, Deloraine, George Town, Scottsdale, Whitemark, Bridport, St Helens, Bicheno and Fingal.

In preparation for the expected weather conditions, the State Emergency Service established Operations Centres in Burnie and Launceston this morning to respond to incidents as a result of the weather conditions.

Assistant Director, Nick Connolly stated, “by 4pm this afternoon there have been a number of calls in the North West, mainly between Burnie, Wynyard and Sisters Beach resulting in around ten requests for assistance, these were mainly due to overflowing guttering and water ingress to properties.”

“No requests have been received so far in the Northern Region, although this weather pattern wasn’t expected to cross until this afternoon."

The SES will continue to monitor the weather situation across the North and North East of the State.

It is important that the public is prepared for these conditions, SES advises people in affected areas to:

  • Drive to the conditions - Do not drive, walk or ride through flood waters
  • People within these catchments should be mindful of rising river levels
  • Ensure drains and gutters are clear of debris and are running freelyBeware of damaged trees and power lines, trees & limbs may fall in these conditions
  • Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings
  • Manage pets and livestock

  • Disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility
