The State Emergency Service and Bureau of Meteorology advise that damaging winds and rain may affect the State today.

Damaging West to North Westerly Winds, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 110 km/h, are possible in parts of Tasmania during today. However, isolated

Destructive wind gusts in excess of 130 km/h are possible in storms about the

northeast and east coast forecast districts

 The strongest gusts are expected during this morning and afternoon.

Winds are expected to ease this evening.

Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Launceston, St Helens,

Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk and Hobart.


SES advises the following precautions BEFORE the storm:


  • Secure all loose items including garden furniture, umbrellas etc
  • Ensure sheds and cubby houses are well anchored and don’t let your children play in them during the storm
  • Have a torch and radio with fresh batteries available for weather updates
  • Check that your spouting and downpipes are not blocked
  • Make sure all poisons are stored well above ground level
  • Make sure your pets are well secured
  • Turn of power sources such as gas and electricity if flooding occurs
  • Have waterproof bags ready to protect clothing and important documents from flood waters
  • Listen to the radio for weather updates

What to do:

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
