Flash Flooding in Northern Region

Significant rain in the northern region has caused flash flooding in localised areas late yesterday and overnight.  St Marys, Scamander, Meander Valley and Launceston have been most affected.

SES North region has received over 100 calls for assistance.  Crews are well prepared with sandbags available to be collected by residents or to be delivered if residents are unable to collect them due to unsafe road conditions.

An evacuation centre has been opened at St Marys Hall, Main Street, St Marys due to flash flooding.

Advice to the public is to not drive through flood waters under any circumstances.  Never walk, play or ride in flood waters.  Check that family and neighbours are safe and aware of what is happening.  Secure your pets and keep them safe.

If safe to do so, ensure drains and gutters around properties are cleared of rubbish and debris.

Listen to ABC Radio for regular updates.

Tasmania Police website has up-to-date information of road closures in affected areas.  www.police.tas.gov.au Link to External Site

Check the SES website (www.ses.tas.gov.au) and TasALERT (www.tasalert.tas.gov.au Link to External Site) for updates.

Ends.
